physical processes responsible for the attenuation of ultraviolet
(UV) to the surface, mainly associated with clouds, are
investigated in this research. In addition, it presents a new
methodology in estimating Ultraviolet Index (UVI) in different
cloudy conditions. This methodology can be considered a pioneer in
the combination of geostationary satellite data and measures the
surface to estimate the parameter CMF (Cloud Modification Factor).
This parameter is used to estimate the UV radiation in the
presence of cloudiness. UVI estimates are performed by the
radiative transfer model UVSIM (UltraViolet SImplified Model),
which is coupled with cloud types of information from the
classifier clouds DSA / CPTEC. This study concludes that the UVI
estimates made by UVSIM are well represented, as r\$^{2}\$ =
0.90 and BIAS = -0.33 obtained through observations. The
parameterization is developed in determining CMF values from
reflectance (REF) observed satellites. The results indicate that
the cloud parameterization of type cirrus presents r\$^{2}\$ =
0.80, cumulus r\$^{2}\$ = 0.79, stratus r\$^{2}\$ = 0.72 and
convective r\$^{2}\$ = 0.89. By evaluating the parameter, it was
observed that 65\% of UVI variation estimated in the presence of
cirrus clouds are explained by the comments to the surface, while
the validation for stratus, cumulus and convective given 65\%,
64\% and 56\%, respectively. Therefore, the new parameter best
describe the cloud compared with CMF values currently used. This
study contributes to the understanding of the impacts made by
atmospheric constituents and better numerical representation in
the UVI estimates presence of cloudiness. The importance of
getting accurate estimates is the fact that UV radiation is
considered the main cause of the type of cancer emergence
non-melanoma (estimate 182 thousand in 2014), which is the most
significant type in numbers of cases estimated cancers every
year.",
